Save section as a PDFStudent records are considered confidential and are maintained primarily for students’ educational and professional benefit. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (embed link) governs access to records related to current or former students and generally requires written permission to disclose information, except in limited circumstances outlined by law. Certain records – such as employment-related files, law enforcement records, some medical records, and personal notes not shared with others – are excluded from FERPA’s scope. Basic demographic information known as “directory information” may be shared in public documents or released without specific consent. University staff accessing student records must demonstrate a legitimate educational interest.
Anyone with access to student education records is expected to understand and follow FERPA regulations and the University’s student records policy. Faculty and staff with such access are strongly encouraged to complete the University’s online FERPA training annually. More information is available in the University’s Student Rights & Records policy, and questions may be directed to the Office of the Registrar or the Office of the Vice President and General Counsel.
